Ahmedabad: A few lessons in management
education at the elite B-school, Indian Institute of
Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), are empowering ex-armed forces
personnel in bagging key roles in the corporate world.
In this series, fifth batch of 49 ex-armed forces
personnel enrolled at Armed Forces Program (AFP) offered at
IIM-A are seeking campus placements this year.
"In the past, over 200 personnel after graduating from
IIM-A have got both domestic and international offers with
salary packages in the range of Rs 8 to 25 lakh," one of the
course participants, Cdr Paramjit Singh Bhatia said.
Objective of AFP is to provide management education to
officers of Indian armed forces, whether in short commission
or regular commission, who are due to retire shortly or have
retired, and thereby help them in their endeavour to start
civil life after retirement, he said.
"I have been personally involved with this programme
since inception and have found immense dedication and
adaptability among the AFP participants," Director IIM-A Dr
Samir Barua said.
AFP is a six month full time residential programme for
the ex-officer of armed forces at IIM-A that was specially
designed by the institute at the instance of Directorate
General of Resettlement, Ministry of Defence.
"The curriculum of AFP is somewhat similar to the
executive programmes. Emphasis here is more on concepts of
analytical knowledge for managerial effectiveness and
integrates their varied experience with the skills required to
excel in the corporate world," Bhatia said.
"This course has given me a perspective that has
helped me in post-retirement life," says Lt Col Vishal Sharma,
AFP-08 batch pass out, currently serving as VP-Operations for
Paxcel Tech Ltd.
"This course has helped me in adjusting to the
corporate world much faster," says retd Cdr Manoj Kumar
Bhatt, now vice president of city based Aatash Nor Control
Systems.
"Officers from last four batches since 2007 have been
working in key roles in operations, project/programme
management, marketing, IT, strategic planning, and SCM apart
from HR and facilities management," course co-ordinator at
IIM-A Prof Pradyumana Khokle said.
"Several of them have already been promoted to higher
levels of responsibility and received acclaim for their
performance in corporate jobs," he added.
