Bhopal: Army Chief General V K Singh
on Friday cleared his Research Degree Committee (RDC) viva as a
prelude to obtain a PhD in Military Science from Barkatullah
University here.

The General will do his PhD on `Security implications
of rise of fundamentalism in Afghanistan: Its Global and
Regional impact with special focus on Wakhan.`
Clad in a civil dress, Singh arrived like a commoner
to appear in the RDC, sans any security.

Normally, the Army Chief moves in a convoy, but today
he came in a Toyota, with another one carrying his staff.

This is perhaps for the first time in the history of
universities in Madhya Pradesh that a top army general
appeared for a viva for PhD enrolment.

Asked why he chose Barkatullah varsity, the General
said very few universities in the country have the facility of
giving PhD in this subject.

On selection of Afghanistan as his research topic, he
said its strategic location has lot of implications on India.
On a query 59-year-old Singh said age has nothing to
do for any kind of research.

The Army Chief, however evaded the query on his
performance in the viva and pointed to his guide Professor
Kailash Tyagi to answer it.

Singh is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff
College, Wellington as well as the Rangers Course at Fort
Benning, USA and the US Army War College, Carlisle.
