India advises against travel to Egypt, all nationals safe

India Saturday advised its nationals to avoid visiting Egypt, which is witnessing widespread anti-government riots in its capital Cairo.

New Delhi: India Saturday advised its nationals to avoid visiting Egypt, which is witnessing widespread anti-government riots in its capital Cairo.

"In view of the prevailing situation in Egypt, Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel to Egypt for the present," said a statement released by the ministry of external affairs.
Over 50 people are feared to have been killed in clashes between demonstrators and security forces across Cairo from Friday.

More than 1,000 people have been arrested this week, with many more reportedly missing.

The external affairs ministry said that the Indian embassy in Cairo is in touch with members of Indian community "who are reported to be safe".
It added that there are around 3,600 people of Indian origin in Egypt, out of which 2,200 are in Cairo.

A round-the-clock control room has been set up in Egypt in the embassy with the following numbers - 202-2736 0556, 202-2736 0052 and 202-2735 6168.
