India commences work on 2nd N-submarine Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Construction of India’s second nuclear submarine has begun at a classified facility in Visakhapatnam, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

This project was launched just 24 months after India’s first nuclear submarine INS Arihant was commissioned.

“The second programme took far lesser time than Arihant to reach the shipyard from the drawing board. This time we had a clear plan and we had learned a lot from our mistakes,” top sources told the daily.

Though exact details of the submarine’s progress have not been made public yet, it is learnt that fabrication of the hull and body has begun. The reactor is being constructed with Russia’s help.

The project is expected to be ready for sea trials by 2015. By that time India would have a Russian submarine and INS Arihant deployed.

The Akula-II class nuclear submarine K-152 Nerpa, to be renamed INS Chakra, will be handed over to Indian Navy by Russian Navy in November-December on a 10-year lease.

i will be shocked if indian missiles or subs actually work under stress. like indian roads & buildings, they will be of poor quality. indians cannot even host a sports event like the commonwealth games. then tells the world ``indian hygine standards are different``. get your cities, roads, airports, get people some shelter first. instead of chest thumping on a bad quality weapons.

hey aussie, india has achieved everything on its own. we did not have the privilege to move to pillage a resource rich island continent, kill its natives and build the civilization of goons. like any other nation, we also have our own challenges and success stories.

dear all, why are your government wasting money on these sort of projects. everyone know india does not have the guts to fight thus even if the great lord shiva borrows his trident, indians will still be the cowards that they are. so do not waste the money but instead use it to built more factories.

it is a good development for india. india will effectively need at least 10 to 12 nuclear subs for survivable nuclear deterrent. we are on the right track. congrats to drdo for getting the work done.

ya ,i agree with prateek singh - last 2-3 years are really good..........the main problem is that, our drdo is/will always make the (so called indigenous) products 60-70% by themselves & then they have to integrate the rest of 30% with foreign parts in it to make it working.. i really hate it i think drdo should also adopt chinese copy-paste approach.......... they have really made great (v v fast)progress in every fields........& now they r coming up with indigenous designs

definitely copy-paste method is easy & fast but it has its own disadvantages.. when u copy a military hardware, ur enemy is knowing abt its wk & breakage points... copy paste tech can provide quantitative advantage but not qualitative...

that really fast by any standard. i used to be critical of drdo, hal but last two years have cpmpletely changed my outlook. i mean tejas is now clearing ioc like champ, arjun mk-ii is going well, a fifth gen fighter is being developed, aircraft carriers are being made, agni-v is to be launched by december and most importantly ballistic missile shield is being operationalised which may very well save millions of lives one day. my salute to our under-appreciated defense organisations who keep working to safeguard our future. three cheers to them.

1-this is an indigenous submarine. an indigenous nuclear submarine. how many nations can built that? 2- no army in whole world is completely indigenous. dont tell us about tech level of china. chinese airforce uses 750 flying coffins (mig-21) stolen from russia. 3-we have money so we are buying equipment with full tot and facilities. mrca winner will build aircrafts in india giving us necessary infra and experience. 4- we are making an fifth gen fighter. we recently made ballistic missile defense. our research institutions are working wonders with little funding they receive. we are proud of them.

awesome news. anybody got an idea what it will be called? arihant-ii or something else? i think ripudaman would be an excellent name.
