India commences work on 2nd N-submarine Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Construction of India’s second nuclear submarine has begun at a classified facility in Visakhapatnam, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

This project was launched just 24 months after India’s first nuclear submarine INS Arihant was commissioned.

“The second programme took far lesser time than Arihant to reach the shipyard from the drawing board. This time we had a clear plan and we had learned a lot from our mistakes,” top sources told the daily.

Though exact details of the submarine’s progress have not been made public yet, it is learnt that fabrication of the hull and body has begun. The reactor is being constructed with Russia’s help.

The project is expected to be ready for sea trials by 2015. By that time India would have a Russian submarine and INS Arihant deployed.

The Akula-II class nuclear submarine K-152 Nerpa, to be renamed INS Chakra, will be handed over to Indian Navy by Russian Navy in November-December on a 10-year lease.

great news. we have to have a minimum of 12 nuke powered sub ie 3 for each naval command wnc, enc, snc and 3 for a&n command. also in must have started training the crews. each sub will surely need two sets of crew each. so by next year we should have 4 sets ready for arihant and the nerpa. probably they are training in vladivastok and that`s why there is delay in arrival of nerpa.

you guys think things are sorted or even better? slightly maybe but no where near it should be. we should be ashmed of ourselves. you may think this is good news but in the overall picture we are soo far behind. additionally why you are seeing progress lately is that `our` indegineous equipment is 60-75% foreign outsourced componenets and assitence and the other 20% is based from foreign tech transfer indegineously. its not like we are coming up with it ourselves. we are not even able to use all tech from others to match the level required as china. this pathetic state of affairs will get us scre#$% i tell you. even after managing get 1 or two products to the minimum borderline level, the production is at a pathetically slow level and no one really has bought about any change. our country is still in as bad state as we were in since 300 years ago with all the intelligence and brain drain.

1-this is an indigenous submarine. an indigenous nuclear submarine. how many nations can built that? 2- no army in whole world is completely indigenous. dont tell us about tech level of china. chinese airforce uses 750 flying coffins (mig-21) stolen from russia. 3-we have money so we are buying equipment with full tot and facilities. mrca winner will build aircrafts in india giving us necessary infra and experience. 4- we are making an fifth gen fighter. we recently made ballistic missile defense. our research institutions are working wonders with little funding they receive. we are proud of them.

that really fast by any standard. i used to be critical of drdo, hal but last two years have cpmpletely changed my outlook. i mean tejas is now clearing ioc like champ, arjun mk-ii is going well, a fifth gen fighter is being developed, aircraft carriers are being made, agni-v is to be launched by december and most importantly ballistic missile shield is being operationalised which may very well save millions of lives one day. my salute to our under-appreciated defense organisations who keep working to safeguard our future. three cheers to them.
