New Delhi: India has conveyed its concern to the United States over the way an Indian diplomat's daughter was arrested in New York.

Indian Ambassador to the US Meera Shankar today said the wrongful arrest of Krittika Biswas, daughter of the vice counsel at the Indian Consulate in Manhattan, Debashish Biswas, had been taken up with the US government "very seriously".

"It is a case which the Embassy had taken up very seriously with the US government. When she was apprehended, we worked through the night as we got the information in the night. We woke up the US officials in the night and got her released the next day," she said.

Shankar was talking to reporters after a meeting with Home Minister P Chidambaram here.

The envoy said there was concern over the way the 18-year-old student was apprehended.

"Now she has sought permission to file a case against the US authorities and she is fighting it. Subsequent to her release, we have conveyed our concern to the US government about the way she was treated. The case is obviously a matter of concern to all of us," she said.

Krittika was arrested by the New York Police on February 8 on the suspicion of sending obscene emails to her teacher in Queens' John Browne High School. She was released a day later after being found innocent.

The girl is now suing New York City's Government for USD 1.5 million for what she claims was a wrongful arrest.

India must too learn the lesson to let its customs and police function freely, without goverment`s interference, like in the USA.

In India, whenever police or customs want to or do arrest Wetsern foreigners, politicians make sure these people are released immediately. Such politicians must be sacked and thrown in jail.

The Indian Govt. should do more than just showing concern. This is totally unacceptable behavouir by the U.S. Police by arresting a school student and that too of a diplomatic staff of Indian Mission. The matter should be taken up atleast at the level Foreign Secretaries. Also the Govt. should provide all the necessary legal help for the girl and parents to sue the New York Police.
