New Delhi: India should be named Bharat, a
Congress member said in the Rajya Sabha today.
Through a private member`s bill, Shantaram Naik sought an
amendment in the Constitution to name the country as "Bharat".
He said "India" denotes a territorial concept whereas
"Bharat" signifies much more than the mere territories of
India.

"When we praise our country we say, Bharat Mata ki Jai
and not India ki Jai," Naik said.

Through another private member`s bill, Naik sought
enhanced punishment for those who publicise and market their
drugs which are either harmful or contain no medical
ingredients.

Another bill moved by Janardhan Waghmare (NCP) sought
compulsory HIV test for couples intending to get married and
also for establishing an AIDS controlling authority to provide
counselling and other necessary measures to prevent the
disease.

Brinda Karat (CPI-M) moved a private member`s bill to
amend the Schedule Tribes and other Traditional Forest
Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act 2006.
