India should not support Rajapaksa, says BJP

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu BJP unit on Wednesday said India should not repeat the "mistake" of supporting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, whose government is facing charges of "war crimes'.

Reacting to Rajapaksa's reported statement that India should come forward and help his country in view of the UN and other countries resolution on human rights violations, state party president Pon Radhakrishnan alleged the Centre and Tamil Nadu Government had made a "mistake by helping Sri Lanka in killing thousands of innocent Tamils, on the pretext of eliminating LTTE."

If the Centre extended support to Rajapaksa, the BJP would stage demonstrations across the state, he said.

He also came down heavily on the Congress and its ministers, including P Chidambaram, saying the party which had opposed a JPC on the 2G spectrum issue was trying to "scuttle" the PAC probe.
