New Delhi: Pitching for the promotion of tourism, Vice President M Hamid Ansari today said India was an ideal destination for travellers and all stake holders in this sector would be encouraged by the government to perform better.

"The government stands committed to facilitating the visits of tourists, promoting development of tourism and hospitality infrastructure, encouraging niche tourism segments and enhancing the skills of personnel in the tourism sector," Ansari said while presenting the National Tourism Awards 2008-09, here.

Rajasthan received the award for best tourism related programmes, Andhra Pradesh was chosen for best tourism infrastructure and Sikkim for best state from the North East for tourism related programmes.

Congratulating the winners he said the industry has already shown its resilience during adverse circumstances and with all stakeholders working together with the active support of the Ministry of Tourism, India would emerge as one of the leading tourism destinations.

He said tourism has emerged as an important employment provider and a significant contributor to economic growth.

Describing India as an ideal tourist destination, the Vice-President said, "Our history, rich cultural heritage, diversity of flora, fauna and landscapes contribute to it in great measure. Despite this, our full potential is yet to be tapped."

The National Tourism Awards, given to the best performers in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry during the year 2008-2009, were presented at a glittering ceremony.
