New Delhi: Pitching for the promotion of
tourism, Vice President M Hamid Ansari today said India was an ideal destination for travellers and all stake holders in this
sector would be encouraged by the government to perform
better.
"The government stands committed to facilitating the
visits of tourists, promoting development of tourism and
hospitality infrastructure, encouraging niche tourism segments
and enhancing the skills of personnel in the tourism sector,"
Ansari said while presenting the National Tourism Awards
2008-09, here.
Rajasthan received the award for best tourism related
programmes, Andhra Pradesh was chosen for best tourism
infrastructure and Sikkim for best state from the North East
for tourism related programmes.
Congratulating the winners he said the industry has
already shown its resilience during adverse circumstances and
with all stakeholders working together with the active support
of the Ministry of Tourism, India would emerge as one of the
leading tourism destinations.
He said tourism has emerged as an important employment
provider and a significant contributor to economic growth.
Describing India as an ideal tourist destination, the
Vice-President said, "Our history, rich cultural heritage,
diversity of flora, fauna and landscapes contribute to it in
great measure. Despite this, our full potential is yet to be
tapped."
The National Tourism Awards, given to the best performers
in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry during the
year 2008-2009, were presented at a glittering ceremony.
