Indian woman faces gallows in Malaysia

A 62-year-old grandmother from Chennai is facing the gallows here after being sentenced to death for drug trafficking by a local court that found her defence full of contradictions.

Kuala Lumpur: A 62-year-old grandmother from Chennai is facing the gallows here after being sentenced to death for drug trafficking by a local court that found her defence full of contradictions.

Fazila Bee Abdul Kareem, a mother of three children,
was charged last month with trafficking in 2,925 g of ketamine
at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on February 13,
2009.

In her ruling High Court judge Noor Azian said it did
not make sense that the accused had come to Malaysia to work
as claimed by her.

She said that if what Fazila claimed was true, she
would have details of her employer and would also possess a
work permit.

Fazila, she noted, came here on a tourist visa.

"Her evidence is not consistent and is a fabrication,"
Noor Azian said, adding that Fazila`s testimony that another
Indian woman had asked her to check-in her bag at the airport
in India did not make sense.
