Indians frustrated with corruption: Survey Washington: The wave of anti-graft protests in India possibly reflects the sense among many Indians that the corruption problem is becoming worse, according to a new Gallup poll.

In 2010, almost half (47 percent) said the level of corruption in India was higher than it was five years earlier, while 27 percent said it was about the same, the poll released by the noted US public opinion agency on Monday revealed.

The groundswell of public support for social activist Anna Hazare and the anti-corruption movement shows Indians recognize that the problem is endemic in their society, the poll suggested.

In response to the 2010 poll, 78 percent of Indians said corruption is widespread within the Indian government, and 71 percent said it is widespread within businesses in India.

Asked whether they thought the government was doing enough to fight corruption, more than one-third of Indians (35 percent) said yes, while half (50 percent) said no.

Unemployed Indians were particularly likely to feel the government was not doing enough to fight corruption, with nearly two-thirds (65 percent) responding that way.

Unemployed Indians were also among the most likely to say they recently found themselves in a situation in which they needed to pay a bribe.

Bribery remains widespread in Indian society; about one in five Indians (21 percent) overall said they had faced a situation in the past 12 months in which a bribe was required to solve a problem.

Among the country's unemployed, however, the figure rises to 43 percent -- an indicator that those seeking welfare and job services are among the most vulnerable.

Survey results reveal Indians do not believe the problem is getting any better and many have had to deal with corruption personally.

However, the likelihood that systemic change can be implemented largely depends on whether Indians' underlying dissatisfaction produces sustained public pressure for reform, Gallup said.

Gallup said results are based on face-to-face interviews with 6,000 adults, per survey wave. It put the maximum margin of sampling error at ±1.7 percentage points.

The problem in India is Media themselves are MEGA-
Corrupt Corporations. So however, frustrated the Public may be, media never reflects their opinion. It always diverts attention away from Pressing Core issues to vague non-important political issues! First media has to BECOME FREE & Bold!

zee news this is an informative nice article. While what the survey reflects is the whole truth, i am surprised that none of the comments made above give kudos to relatively corrupt free govts like Gujarat. afterall its the comment makers responsibility to also highlight clean states & politicians.
1 MY suggestion would be the less contrils & commend is with the govt, much lesser will be govt.
2.Local panchayats &councils shld distribute many day to day permits.this eliminates ministers, higher officers etc.
3.Strict & immediate punishment for corruption.
i would like zee news to highlight governance in gujarat& facilities to public so that this becomes the norm elsewhere. Even Bihar model shld be highlighted.

How much ever I feel bad about the response to the article, i cant but agree with them. I think post independence we are at our worst stage in corruption. Our politicians are at their worst, the new mantra of corruption is in collision with the corporate. Corruption has become mainstream now and nothing is shocking ( see the last 4-6 years)

Indians are biggest hypocrites, corrupt and shameless people. In survey they will become or pretend to be the most honest while behind they will be hankering for money. To quote Rajkumar - I am ashamed to be an Indian!

Its nobody else, but we Indian need to blame ourselves for corruption. We ourselves need to bypass the system to get the work faster, by paying bribes.
At home, we bribe our children with sweets & toys for finishing milk, or food, or for getting good marks. Slowly slowly, it gets into a child blood, that to perform a work, he needs something in return. Sameway, he knows that to get a work done from others, he need to offer him some incentive. - Corruption starts.

Also our system needs to be changed. The counters for public dealing with all service providers (govt & pvt sector), should be open early mornings or evenings or on weekends, so that consumers can get their work done. What happens is that during office hours, if a consumers goes for some work, he is under pressure to return to office as soon as possible, otherwise the boss will fire him. He is tend to pay bribe to get work done fast. Some people offer bribe, to make a cut i.e. pay 300 as bribe and charge 500 from employer with good comments.

The menace of corruption has engulfed the society . As the masses have witnessed multi crore scandals and scams common man is of the concept that the corruption is weakening our Economy to a large extent . As the Social activist Mr Anna Hazare has raised his voice against corruption sending a message to the masses that the Evil concept of corruption be curbed . Indian masses supported Mr Hazare for this cause .
