Ishrat encounter: PC slams Modi govt Washington/Ahmedabad: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday slammed the Gujarat government in the controversial Ishrat Jahan encounter saying it can't justify the killings using central intelligence inputs as conclusive proof inviting a harsh response in which the Centre was described as being "nervous".

"If a state government acts as though intelligence inputs are evidence or conclusive proof, I am sorry for that state government... Certainly no one suggested that based on an intelligence input you should kill someone," he told a press conference here joining issue with the Narendra Modi government over the central government affidavit in the killing of Ishrat and three of her companions in June 2004.

"I think too much is being attributed to that affidavit if it is meant to defend the government of Gujarat against the excesses that may have been committed by its police. I am sorry for the government of Gujarat and the manner in which it runs its police administration," he said.

"What did the affidavit say?," he asked and added: "To the best of my knowledge the affidavit says that intelligence inputs were shared with the Gujarat government."

Responding to Chidambaram's remarks, Gujarat government spokesman Jai Narayan Vyas said the Centre was becoming "nervous" in the backdrop of its affidavit which described the four victims as terror suspects. The Gujarat government cited the affdavit after magistrate S P Tamang report said the encounter was fake and executed in cold blood.

"The Government of India for the last two or three days have gone so much nervous that they are trying to make statements which are absolutely nervousness, not taking into consideration the process of law and totally disbelieving in this entire process," Vyas said.

PC is acting like a laptop-dog of Sonia and Congress for vote bank politics because the terrorists are from a certain religious group. If the central government`s intelligence information is not good enough for Gujarat to act, why should Pakistan listin to the current central governments dossier on Mumbai Events. Shame on these politicians not supporting out intelligence guys and police!

According to Chidambaram state government should not accept intelligence report from Centre as proof. Can he please explain to Pakistan why they should accept intelegence report from the same government as proof about involvement involement of Pakistani nationals in terrorist attacks on Mumbai?

While I agree you do not kill people based on intelligence report unless it has been proved ... all the facts are not clear regarding whether the encounter was fake or not. But the intelligence report has to have some weight and can provide motive and link .. besides what is home ministry doing about these reports. Instead of protecting its citizens it is playing politics. 26/11 happened because no one connected the dots and took any action to stop it.

Home ministry does not seem to have learned their lesson .. they are paper tigers .. no concrete action based on intelligence. Just wait until something happens and then talk. That is why after having sent all these dossiers to Pakistan no action has been takeby that country!

What do you mean The Gujarat Police should have ignored the Central input? And had the terrorists succeeded in accomplishing their job, the same Central Intyelligence Agencies would have washed their hands and squarely blamed the very same Gujarat Government for not taking any action on the secret and sensitive information shared by them. In any case, since the Gujarat Government is ruled by opposition and specially by Modi and the Central Government wants to embarrass them, hence, this politically laced statements are issued by the Central Government. Please dont play politics at least on ``terrorism``. It would have certainly be appreciated by one and all had the Central Government defended the State Government.

Can PC tell why there is intelligence if it is not true. If you dont act on intelligence, what is the value of it. I think US attacked Iraq purely based on intelligence. Here we are talking about country being attacked and you dont have the guts to support your intelligence team. Wake up PC, it is time to own your actions ( does not mean your own but your teams since you are the big boss - I think you Home Minister of India not Minister of Congress/Sonia.

Why should there be a Home ministry in central Govt. if States are responsible for investigating terrrorists sponsored by foreign countries? It is time for PC to understand that he has a role to play in defending Indian citizens(some could incidentally be Hindus - rather unfortunately) than trying to break Modi by all and any means.
