Italy betrays on Marines’ return, India mum Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: In a major embarrassment to the UPA government, Italy has gone back on its word to send back two marines charged with killing of two fishermen off the Kerala coast back to India to face trial.

"Italy has always argued that Indian authorities have violated their obligations under international law...especially the principle of immunity from trial by the organs of a foreign state and the United Nation Convention on the Law of the Sea," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The decision not to send Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, who had been allowed to come home to vote and meet their families, back to India was taken by Italy's defence and justice ministries in consultation with the prime minister's office, it said.

Italian foreign ministry also accused India of not responded to its requests to seek a diplomatic solution to the case, reports said.

The Marines were allowed a short leave so as to allow them to vote in the recently-concluded elections in their native country after a solemn assurance by Rome to New Delhi that the two would be sent back to India.

Here in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid was guarded in his response.

The minister said they have received a letter and added: “We will read the letter sent by the Italian government and then decide the future course of action.”

“There’s no point in commenting without reading what they have to say,” Khurshid stated further.

As the Parliament is in session, the government would find it difficult to face Opposition fire on the issue.

The two marines have been at the centre of a year-long international row for allegedly shooting dead two Indian fishermen after mistaking them for pirates off the southern Indian state of Kerala February 2012.

Italy claims the incident occurred in international waters and has been trying to get Latorre and Girone tried in Italian courts, while India contends the shooting occurred in its own territory.

Earlier, when the marines had gone home for Christmas, Italian foreign minister Giulio Terzi had sent a “letter of guarantee” to his counterpart Salman Khurshid assuring him of their return.

India should attach the property of the Italian govt in India and also black list Italy as a country for further dealings and review the entire bilateral and commercial relationship.

India is ruled by spineless, self serving, power monger politicians. India will be slapped by every dick and harry. It is obvious India will keep quite for obvious Italian connections. We have seen many Italian connected scams taking place. Did we really take any concrete action? Let us live this shameful life.

It is a matter of breach of promise given to Supreme court of India. Also, how many foreigners lost their lives in Indian jails undergoing trial? None.

It is not a big shock, as this was the expected outcome if you think from a normal Indian Citizen`s perspective. May be a shock for the so called Indian Govt ,) :P. Another noticeable thing was the dimplomatic stands of the So called Churches authorities from India. They have also betrayed their on poor followers. It is a wastage of time and energy to give more comments on this issue any more.

Bravo to Italian authorities, who have defended their marines even on cause of worsening relations with India. A true government step for their citizens. But we can not expect the same from government as they are indulged in vote bank politics. This also shows the Congress`s Italian connection especially G family and how vulnerable it can be, if do not wake up at time & keep licking G family.

Everybody knows this is what going to happen, because Congress Ruling Govt, in Kerala and in Centre, they never oppose in court. The State and Centre Govt are fully responsible for this incident and the Congress Govt will never take any steps to bring them back and all the Indians knows the reasons.

Sending them back to Italy, not once, but twice, during their trials? Is the Indian government so stupid, or some Indo-Italian mafia was behind all this? Lives of two fishermen are hardly of any value in this country. Shame on the Indian diplomacy, every country in this world feel like bullying us. Is this for the international recognition to our mental bankruptcy?
