Jaitley, Sushma against naming Sonia in BJP resolution

A strident attack on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi at the BJP National Executive that concluded was after some reluctance by a section of the top brass over naming the first family of the ruling party.

Guwahati: A strident attack on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi at the BJP National Executive that concluded on Sunday was after some reluctance by a section of the top brass over naming the first family of the ruling party.

A section of the BJP, including Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj had suggested that it was not a good idea to name the Congress President as it could open possibility of personal attacks in Parliament.

On the other hand, party sources said Rajnath Singh felt that since the BJP was already attacking the Congress leadership on corruption, it would lose sheen if Sonia was not named.
This was felt even more so when the party decided to atack Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The initial reluctance to name Sonia while attacking the Congress on 2G spectrum, Commonwealth and Adarsh housing scam seems to have been set aside by those not in favour of the idea after the revelations made by the Income Tax Appellete Tribunal with regard to Bofors.

The matter came up for discussion at a meeting of the party`s core group to deliberate the issues before the National Executive.

The sources, however, said the issue did not figure at the two-day national executive.
BJP chief spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the naming of the `first family` of the Congress in the political resolution means naming Sonia and rejected suggestions that the party was shying away from attacking her directly.

In his inaugural address of BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, the name of Sonia or Rahul Gandhi did not figure in the written speech but party leaders said Gadkari did name Sonia.

Gadkari, Advani, Swaraj, Jaitley, and Rajnath Singh have named Sonia either in their speeches at the BJP meet or at the NDA rally.
