New Delhi: Jamia Milia Islamia Vice Chancellor on Thursday met members of the University`s top statutory bodies and formally informed them about the grant of minority status to the institution.
The Academic Council and the Executive Councils met in emergency meetings today, two days after the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) ruled that Jamia was a minority institution.
However, the bodies could not discuss the issue in detail as the University is yet to receive an official certified copy of the ruling.
"The Vice Chancellor said the meeting was called to formally inform the statutory bodies about the development, as is the norm, but since the University does not have a certified copy of the ruling nothing else was done," said an AC member.
The emergency meetings were called in the wake of the NCMEI decision to accord minority status to the University, a move that would allow it to reserve 50 percent of its seats for Muslim candidates.
The University has said it will make a study of the judgment in the coming days and work out the modalities of its implementation.
The ruling has to be adopted and endorsed by the two bodies after a detailed study and discussion.
"However, since we did not have an official copy, no discussion could take place, and the meeting last only a few minutes," said the member.
Jamia is the first Central University to be accorded the minority status, and this would allow it to do away with the 27 percent mandated OBC reservation.
