Kachroo`s ragging accused get 4-yr jail Zeenews Bureau

Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh: Four medical students who were convicted for ragging to death their junior Aman Kachroo, were sentenced to four years in jail each by a fast track court here Thursday.

Besides the four year prison term, Additional district and sessions judge Purinder Vaidya who had held the students guilty under sections 304 II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 34 (common intention) of IPC, also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the accused.

Nineteen-year-old Aman, a fresher of Rajendra Prasad Medical College and Hospital in Tanda, about 15 km from here in Kangra district, succumbed to injuries on March 8, 2009, after being allegedly ragged by final year students--Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma.

Reacting to the judgement, Aman's father Rajendra Kachroo termed it as a victory and said this is a message in loud and clear terms to people who still indulge in ragging.

"I see this as a victory not only for me but for the people who are fighting for judicial reforms, criminal reforms and against ragging. I see it as a victory," he said.

Kachroo, however, voiced his disappointment in the court given the same sentence to all the four boys and wished that the court had given more punishment to the ring leader who pushed others into perpetrating the crime.

Senior public prosecutor Jiwan Lal Sharma had contended that Aman was brutally beaten up under the garb of ragging by his four seniors and had succumbed to his injuries.

The court has recorded the statement of 38 witnesses, comprising doctors, police personnel and Aman's father during the trial.

Kachroo, appearing in court for the first time in the case on August 28 this year, had said his son spoke to him in detail about the incident of ragging that occurred in the college.

"Aman even told me that he had given in writing a complaint to college authorities regarding the (ragging) incident... Three to four hours after I got the phone call from Aman, somebody informed me on telephone from the college that he had passed away," he had told the court.

The court had also re-examined two doctors - Harjeet Pal Singh of the ENT department, and DP Swami, assistant professor of forensic medicine department of the hospital - who are related to this case.

On July 17, the fast track court had granted bail to all four accused in the case, but later the Himachal Pradesh High Court cancelled the bail of the accused.

This is not the justice which is given to ``Aman Kachroo`` the court has failed to give the justice the killers of ``Aman Kachroo`` deserves more punishment because what they have done is a crime the biggest crime the killers dont deserve 4 years in jail but they deserve more than 100 years in jail so that from next time no one do this type of crime never ever in his/her life. Himachal Court have to set the example on this case but they failed.

Ragging is showing someone down who is helpless in that scenerio. It has been happening over the ages all over the world specially india. Helpless people have endured it all their lives.
Ragging tantamounts to torturing someones soul, that too brutally. While body fails to endure the pain soul may live to wither in unending pain. Tormenters of such crimes should be given the worst they deserve.

@ Mr.Sravan,
Sir, I also agree with your views that seniors are mentor to their junior. But when it is done in true spirit without any physical torture. Now-a-days they do not understand the real sense of ragging. They should do the ragging but that should be to give them a lesson about culture, environment, system of the campus and in this way they can also do the activities which they alongwith their juniors should enjoy. There are many ways of ragging without physical tortures to make juniors smart as per need of time. But when it is turned into Physical tortures, then it should not be permitted at any cost. Many students starts thinking to leave the study only due to these ugly form of ragging? Will any body support to have ragging in the present deformed way/manner.I think even not Mr. Sravan will support! Will you Sir?

Why We should always blame the seniors only ...i have also gone through the junior and senior life ...never had any problem with the seniors or anyone in my life as the main thing is we should respect seniors in college as they r helpful in our life...no body does ragging or any illegal work until unless some thing nonsense done by the juniors in my point of view .... i can frankly say that now iam in gud position is bcoz of my seniors only who helped a lot in my student life in an unknown environment ..!!

Court has given punishment to accused. In addition to that the affilation and recognition of the institution itself should be cancelled by the court. Because it is total failure of administration of the Institution which could not put controlover the miscreants and ragging culture even after written complaint by the victum.

my full sympathy with the family of aman who fought till the end but i think this punishment is not enough for the accusors...they should be strictly penalized...and what about the medical college...no action still on them where all dese illegal things are practiced apart from medicine and surgery.

I think the parents of culprit students are also responsible in some way for not raising their children in a civilised manner. There should be stringent punishment for those responsible for ragging crimes, as many incidents of suicides by students due to ragging have come into light in the recent past in India. There should be debates on ragging thru media to create better awareness among masses so as to eradicate this menacing disease atleast from India.

In addition to the jail, all their medical registration and accrades should be taken away and they should not be allowed to practice medicine. People who can take lives purposely cannot save anyone`s life. they should be considered grade 12 students only. I hope Indian Government understands the seriousness of these kind of crimes because if this doesn`t happen, I will not miss my country any more, Infact, I would feel proud that I left that country a while back, not that these kind of crimes do not happen where I am but they are taken very seriously and punished hard too in every other country than India
