Kochi: Former President A P J Abdul Kalam
on Thursday asked engineering students to turn entrepreneurs and
start small enterprises to beat the economic slowdown and
generate employment.

"Students should generate employment for the country`s
welfare and become leaders with a passion for developing a
vision for the nation. They should know how to manage
successes and failures," he said, addressing students of Toc H
Institute of Science and Technology near Arakkunmam.

Speaking on `Engineering education empowers`, he
suggested the students to have experience of system
integration and management. He also advised them to take up a
rural development mission in Arakkunnam and other nearby
villages.

"The aim should be to increase per capita income of the
people in the area by three times in the next five years," he
said.

Kalam also laid the foundation stone for the J C Bose
Centre for Research and Advanced Studies initiated by the
college.
