Beijing: Senior Congress leader Karan
Singh, President of Indian Council for Cultural Relations
(ICCR), has been conferred honorary professorship by Shenzhen
University, one of the leading universities in South China.

Receiving the honour at function at the university
yesterday, Singh said a stronger cultural understanding will
certainly help in broadening the perception of convergence in
interests of both India and China as they rise in the
international order.

It was in this spirit that India has built an Indian
style Buddhist temple in the White Horse Temple complex in
Luoyang, China. President Pratibha Patil had visited the
temple during her recent visit to the country, a press release
issued by Indian Embassy here today quoted him as saying.

Singh said that both the countries should stand
together in international cultural platforms like UNESCO to
safeguard mutual interests and make joint efforts to get more
heritage sites in Asia and the developing world listed in the
World Heritage list.

He said that the Festival of India in China organised
to mark the 60th Anniversary of establishment of diplomatic
relations was a huge success with Indian dance and music
performances brought to more than thirty-five Chinese cities.

Similarly, China had also organised several events in
India.

He also recalled the contributions made by Gurudev
Rabindranath Tagore, Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis, Prof Tan Yunshan,
among others, in strengthening relations between both the
countries.

ICCR has established a Visiting Chair in Shenzhen
University in October 2008. Another Visiting Chair was
established in Jinan University, also in Guangdong Province,
last month.

A Visiting Chair was also established in Fudan
University in Shanghai earlier in the year, the press release
said.
