New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday pitched for cleansing the Indian political set up and called for keeping criminals out of the system.

Sonia said efforts should be made by political parties to reach a consensus on keeping candidates with criminal past out of politics.

The Congress chief made the remarks at a function here to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Election Commission.

Established on January 25, 1950, a day before India became Republic, the Election Commission has been striving to keep the purity of the election process in the world's largest democracy.

The year-long celebrations were opened by President Pratibha Patil.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, BJP president Nitin Gadkari, senior BJP leader LK Advani, Left leaders Prakash Karat and AB Bardhan besides several Union ministers were present on the occasion.

Kudos to congress President Sonia Gandhi for advocaing weeding out politicians with criminal records from politics. To strengthen our democracy, hope all political parties by rising above pettty, selfish motives will strive to discard all politicians with criminal back ground from thier fold. Also in future before giving ticket to the aspiring candidates to fight the elections, the background and antecedents of all should be thoroughly scritinised to inculcate clean image in the parliament.

Mrs. Sonia Gandhi should not just be making a statement but should be looking at her own party`s M.P.s and M.L.A.s and see how many of them have criminal records. In recent Jharkhand elections 2/3rd of elected M.L.A.s have criminal records. How can such criminal elected polticians can make laws to provide fair juctice to the general public ? Generally most of the politicians use criminals to help them in the elections and in return they protect the criminals from the legal system and the justice. The whole political system needs to be changed and all political parties should agree and make laws to not allow the criminals to contest elections. Only then we can see some change in political system and will see good and fair Govt.s in future.

A very decorative and good intentioned statement. Will it remain a political statement or put to use? Sonia, indeed, started with a positive note, when she discarded one of her inner caucus member Natwar Singh, when he figured in the scam. Keep it up and show to the Nation that you mean it.

This is good Start,I would add one more
That has to do with BANNING

Promise of LOW COST FOOD PROMISE DURING ELECTION SEASON.

All parties should agree on this because this is not GODD for Nation, and it Lowers Bar on Ethics in POLITICS FOR SHORT TERM GAIN FOR THE PARTY, THIS has nothing to do with National Economy, benifit to the NATION.

Now regarding FOOD PRICE - Sharad Powar -HAS TO GO, IF WE WANT CLEAN RESPONSIVE GOVERNMENT.

In stead of giving advise, she should look within her party. A. R. Antuley, Ajit Jogi, Jag Mohan Reddy from A. P. and there many mores who not just criminals but also robbing the country for many years.
