`Lame-duck UPA govt admitted in ICU and taking its last breath`

The BJP lashed out at the UPA Government after the M Karunanidhi-led DMK withdrew its support over the Lankan Tamils issue, saying the Cong at the Centre has almost been admitted in the ICU and is taking its last breath.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday lashed out at the UPA Government after the M Karunanidhi-led DMK withdrew its support over the Lankan Tamils issue, saying the ruling Congress Party at the Centre has almost been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is taking its last breath.
BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the latest political development is nothing very amusing, and added that the credibility of the DMK has always been doubtful because they were one of the strongest supporters of the UPA Government. "But having said that, the foremost fact remains that no alliance of the UPA would like to go to the next elections with the burden of the Congress Party, with the burden of Manmohan Singh or Sonia Gandhi. So, they are looking for very first excuse to come out of the alliance," said Rudy. "But having said that, the government had become a minority government the very time Mamata Banerjee-the TMC had withdrawn their support from the Congress and thereafter it has been a lame duck government, which the UPA Government has been surviving. And today with the withdrawal of the DMK from UPA, this government is almost admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), it is taking its last breath and the government will collapse under its own weight undoubtedly," he added. Rudy further said the BJP has very categorically stated that whatever resolution has to be moved, the sentiments of the Tamilians living in India and what they feel about the Tamilians living in Sri Lanka has to be taken into account and those sentiments cannot be ignored. The DMK earlier in the day pulled out of the UPA Government over the issue of alleged human rights violations of Sri Lankan Tamils. "DMK continuing to support the Central Government under these circumstances is impossible. Even if the LTTE is vanquished, our support for the fight of Tamil freedom and human rights is not over," said Karunanidhi, while addressing the media in Chennai. "We totally support the revolution in Sri Lanka and the rights of the Tamils, we have fought for their rights," he added. With the pullout of the 18 DMK MPs in the Lok Sabha, the strength of the UPA Government declines from 295 to 277 in the Rajya Sabha. The DMK has also ruled out any question of giving outside support, but said it might consider changing its stand based on the government``s stand. "If the Parliament passes a resolution before the vote in UNHRC, we might change our stand," Karunanidhi said. Karunanidhi had earlier said India should strongly urge the establishment of a credible and independent international commission of investigation into the allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law and genocide against the Tamil people. The US-sponsored motion puts the island nation in the dock over alleged war crimes and rights violations against Tamil civilians during the final phase of the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The resolution is moved by the US for the second time. Last year, India had supported a similar resolution. ANI
