New Delhi: Seeking to allay Sri Lankan fears on the Kudankulam nuclear plant in case of an accident, India on Wednesday said there was no need to worry as it has high safety standards and a legal mechanism to take care of trans-boundary liability issues.

"Sri Lanka has no reason to worry. The safety features of Kudankulam are of high standards, which have been cleared and verified by several independent groups," Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Srikumar Banerjee said here.

He pointed out that Parliament has passed a law that takes care of trans-boundary issues in case of nuclear accidents.

Parliament has passed the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill in 2010, Banerjee said.

India has also signed the Convention on Supplementary Compensation (CSC) that also has elements to take care of trans-boundary issues, he said. India is yet to ratify the CSC.

I wouldn`t rely on the Indian Atomic Energy Commission alone on the safety of the plant. For security of both the Indian and Sri Lankan citizens the IAEA should conduct a comprehensive safety check before it is commissioned.

Did not Japanese reactors which are known to have the highest standard in the world for safety melt down during a tsunami recently? If so, what is not to say similar accident may happen at Kundnkulam. Or, are we to believe Indian standards are better than the Japanese? Indians may talk big, remember they promised to build a coal power station in Trincomalee and 50,000 houses for Tamil IDPs a long way back. If we go by the way they were progressing it would take another decade to finish them. In short, Unlike Chinese, Indians are known to be recalcitrant when it comes to meet obligations especially if it has to payout. So, Sri Lanka government must compel Indians to put their money where their mouth is and grantee our safety before they operate nuclear reactors nearer to our shores. Leela

Nonsense! India cannot unilaterally confirm its own checks and balances on safety standards of the said nuclear plant and others are at par or better than of those internationally accepted norms and standards. If India is so sure and confident, then why not be audacious enough to subject them to UN body that is responsible for set international standards. If anything to go by, then how stringent has been so called “Indian safety standards” at that “so simple to maintain” gas plant in Bhopal disaster that killed and maimed hundreds and thousands of innocent citizens of India? India has a moral responsibility to prove to the world that Indians are honest in what they claim about this and other nuclear power plants in that country. Why India is reluctant to take the challenge and come out clean? Sri Lanka has all the right to ask questions about this all important issue. If UN has the guts, then it has act accordingly and insist on its inspection of the said plants.
