Lanka praises India for managing ethnic diversities

Lanka praises India for managing ethnic diversities Colombo: Sri Lanka on Saturday praised India for successfully managing ethnic diversities in a federal democratic framework.

"The key lessons from India’s development efforts and its stature as a world’s largest democracy was its success in managing ethnic diversities in a democratic framework and its ability to reach out to the poorest sections of the society through innovative social schemes involving the closest cooperation between the central and the state governments in a stable federal structure," Foreign Minister GL Peiris was quoted as saying by the Indian High Commission in a release today.

Peiris was addressing a gathering at a lecture yesterday by former Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran on "India and Sri Lanka and the Asian Resurgence", marking the launch of the India-Sri Lanka Foundation, it said.

Peiris has long been a proponent of a federal solution to Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict involving the Tamil minority community.

However, with the failure of the Norwegian peace initiative during which the LTTE was thought to have agreed for a federal solution, the federal idea has been shelved.

The Sinhalese nationalists perceived federalism as another means for giving into the LTTE's demand for a separate state.

Amid the direct talks with the main Tamil party TNA, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has tasked a parliamentary select committee to formulate a solution to political aspiration of the Tamil community.

Rajapaksa has responded to calls by Tamil parties for following the Indian model, saying he would look for a "home grown solution".

Has the ``federal solution`` really worked out for India? Why are there so many states under Emergency Rule with separatist and internal wars going on in several parts of India? In addition internal warring is also going on as between the ``haves`` and the ``have nots`` as well as between the ``corrupt`` and the ``non-corrupt`` like the movement led by Ana Hazare. Human rights vioalations is far better than Sri Lanka but yet prevalent in India. Sri lanka`s praise of India sounds all too hollow and empty rhetoric. Nothing more!

Right through the history of Sri Lanka, the country has been governed by the majority. Tamils are a subservient minority who have mainly been peasants and not the ruling but ruled. It will never achieve those wild dreams having licked the big white a hole of the West.

Democracy means majority rule. Mr Kay talks a load of bullshit. Tamils Muslims and Burgers have held the highest offices in the land after Independance in 1948. Shows that he does not know what he is talking about, and this is exactly the rubbish that the politicians are made to believe by the LTTE supporters in Canada, USA, UK, and Australia.

Peiris being the advisor to the President should not say everything what he says, instead he should have the courage to say what he said about the Indian system of governance, not the Home grown solution which is ``GENOCIDE`` of the Tamils

Only GENOCIDE in Sri Lanka for the past 60 years was LTTE terrorist genocide of Sinhalese! LTTE terrorsits committed genocide of Sinhalese for the past 60 years by killing over 1,000,000 innocent Sinhalese by blowing up daily suicide bombs in Colombo. Killing LTTE terrorists is not a crime at all.

While a section of theinternational community is prodded by international human rights organisations to serve Tamils justice, Sinhalese are being settled in Tamils`places to which Tamils have been waiting to return to after the occupation army leaves the Northeast. But the occupation army is helping the Sinhalese settle in the displaced people`s places.

You are asking for a policy of ethnic cleansing, yet the Tamils are free to live anywhere they choose on the Island. It is Just not workable. The Tamils have to accept assimilation as the price for waging war against the Sri Lankan Government and people. Get used to it!

What the president means by `Home grown solution` is militarisation of Tamil areas with mono-ethnic Sinhalese army and brutalise the minorities and destroy their culture and language. For the last 60 years since independence Sri Lankans had enough of home grown pogroms and communal riots to destabilise the communities and engulf ethnic divide in order to subjugate minorities and eventually marginalise them. When Federalism helped heal the rivalries between ethnic communities in civilised countries such as Canada and Switzerland and to some extent in India Sri Lankan rulers hang on to the same unitary system that enables the ethnic Sinhalese to dominate the entire machinery and political institutions.

It is important to settle Sinhalese in the north east of the country. Never allow tamil terrorists to raise their head ever again. These LTTE terrorists committed genocide of sinhalese for the past 60 years and now trying to be angel saints.

This is the typical hogwash that comes from Mr. Rajapksa. While he is continuing to complete the Tamil genlocide with the detrsuction of the Tamil culture, not rehabilitating the Tamils affected by war and land grabbing he sweet talks India. Mr. Manmohan Singh in his typical style listens and agrees. What a travesty of justice!
