New Delhi: Lt Gen S Ravi Shankar, a military
engineer, today took over as the 21st Director General of
Border Roads Organisation (DRO) that caters to the
infrastructure needs of India`s border areas.
Before taking over as BRO DG, Shankar was Additional
Director General (Financial Planning) in Financial Planning
Directorate of the Army headquarters here, according
to a Defence Ministry press release here.
Commissioned into Corps of Engineers (Madras Sappers) in
1972, the officer held staff, command and instructional
appointments including Commander of an Engineer Brigade,
Deputy Military Secretary at Army headquarters and Chief
Engineer at Kolkata-based Eastern Command headquarters.
Shankar, a recipient of Vishisht Seva Medal, is an
alumnus of National Defence Academy (NDA), Indian Military
Academy (IMA), College of Military Engineering (CME) and
Mhow-based Army War College.
He has done an higher command course at the Wellington-
based Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) too, apart from
being an instructor at CME, IMA and DSSC.
Shankar is a Gen Harkirat Singh Gold Medal awardee for
innovation in the field while supporting operations on the
Siachen Glacier. He served as Deputy Chief Engineer in a
United Nations assignment.
