LTTE threat to PM’s life when he visits Chennai

LTTE cadre may enter through southern coast and target PM Manmohan Singh when he visits Chennai in Jan 2011.

Chennai: In a disturbing report, it has emerged that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are hatching a plan to target PM Manmohan Singh when he visits here in January 2011. Also on LTTE radar are Home Minister P Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi as well as the Union Home Secretary GK Pillai.

"We received an alert from a central agency about a
possible threat to the Prime Minister, to the Chief Minister
and his cabinet in Tamil Nadu and to several other VVIPs who
may visit the state", Tamil Nadu DGP Lethika Saran said.

Based on this information, she said, the state has been
put on high alert and "we have strengthened the intelligence
machinery to check if there is any truth in the matter".

Saran said the state government would take all possible
measures to ensure the visits of any VVIP to Tamil Nadu,
including the Prime Minister or our own Chief Minister, is
carried on without any hitch".

PM Singh is scheduled to visit Chennai to inaugurate some projects.

According to an intelligence input, some cadres of the
LTTE, who escaped the wrath of the Sri Lankan Army during the
all-out operations in the island nation earlier this year,
were trying to regroup in India and planning attacks on top
political leaders, particularly when they travel in Tamil
Nadu.

The security agencies have taken the input seriously as
former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE
suicide squad members in the southern state in 1991.

"Though LTTE is now a weak force and all top leaders were
killed during the Sri Lankan Army`s assault, attempts to
regroup by some cadres is a disturbing report," an official
said.
