Mamata upset over Budget being branded as 'Bengal-centric'

New Delhi: Dismissing suggestions that the Rail Budget was West Bengal-centric, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said those raising the issue are "humiliating" the state and advised journalists not to ask "politically manipulative" questions.

"Do not humiliate (West) Bengal" by parroting it," Banerjee said on being asked whether special attention has been given in the Budget for her home state with an eye on Assembly elections next year.

"Your question is totally politically manipulative," she said in an outburst during her post-Budget media briefing.

Banerjee, who was repeatedly interrupted by MPs in the Lok Sabha during her speech, said she cannot "satisfy 800 people (MPs)... I have given wagon industry to Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Guwahati".

The maximum number of projects have been given to other states, she said.

However, Banerjee said that West Bengal "cannot be left out from the development" and she has to take up the cause of the state like other ministers do for their home states.

"Do you think Bengal should be left out from the development?" she asked.

The major announcements relating to West Bengal are in regard to expansion of Kolkata Metro Network, port connectivity, proposed introduction of 'Sanskriti Express' to mark 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore as also 'Bharat Tirath' trains. More superfast non-stop 'Duronto' trains would be introduced from the state.

Besides, West Bengal figures prominently in other plans like new lines and doublings of tracks.

We know that people from hyderabad also needs to travel to Jagannath temple. Similarly, people from Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka,J&K,Himachal,UP,MP,Bihar,Chattisgarh,Uttarakhand,Mizoram,Nagaland,Asaam,Manipur,Sikkim etc along with all other cities of india needs such train to puri but unfortunately, the budget restricts the Govt. Since only one train is announced for puri, it was obvious that Bengal should get some priority. Had it been Hyderabad instead of Howrah, do u(Mr. Manoj) think that proper justice would jave been done to the people of West Bengal who elected Ms. Mamata Banerjee. It is people of West Bengal who elected her. First priority should be Bengal and then other states. See that maximum no of project has gone out of Bengal. Don`t we have guts to praise his job.

This is a Bengal centric railway budget out of the proposed trains 13 trains are for Howrah and 3 for Kolkata. While comparatively busier and more important metros like Mumbai got 10 and Delhi got 6 trains. That means out of 77 trains only Howrah-Kolkata twin city got 16 trains. In the budget she had made sure that her states people can do Bharat Teerh very well for example two trains allotted to Puri both are either connecting to Kolkata/Howrah. What about Hyderabad/Secunderabad don`t we need Jagannath Darshan or we are not devotee of Lord Jagannath ?
