Maoist attack: BJP demands strong anti-Naxal policy

BJP said the Maoist strike in Jharkhand in which an IPS officer was killed shows that no lessons have been learnt from the Chhattisgarh attack in May.

New Delhi: BJP on Wednesday said the Maoist strike in Jharkhand in which an IPS officer was killed shows that no lessons have been learnt from the Chhattisgarh attack in May and demanded that a strong anti-Naxal policy should be formulated and implemented.

"The killing of six police officers, including the SP, is a matter of serious concern. These men were martyred in the Naxal attack yesterday. This proves that no lessons have been learnt from the Darbaghati Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh in May," BJP spokesperson Vijay Sonkar Shastri told reporters here.

Hitting out at Congress, it said there has been no government in Jharkhand for the last six months. Shastri asked why those trying to form the government in the state (a reference to Congress) are silent on the Naxal strike.

"More than 215 police personnel and 100 civilians have been killed in the Naxal attacks since UPA-II came to power, yet the government has not formed any strong policy against it. This government is not able to take any strong action against Naxalism which is a big threat to internal security," Shastri said.

The right-wing party, which has often targeted Congress on the issue of fighting terrorism and Naxalism and alleged that it is too soft on the matter, said the Centre lacks the will-power to fight the menace.

"The Centre should come up with a strong anti-Naxal policy and implement it. All round development of the affected regions, including tribal areas, is also important," Shastri said.

BJP suggested that the Centre should convene a meeting of all the Maoist-affected states to chalk out plans for a joint anti-Naxal operation.

Shastri also said, "The government should think about the so-called intellectuals who support Naxalism."

The party said that the government should give priority to providing modern weapons and good communication equipment to the forces.
