Mumbai: With summer holidays coinciding with the process of data collection for the census, starting May 1, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) appeals to Mumbaikars, who plan to head out of town, to first finish census formalities.

"We appeal to Mumbaikars to first finish all their formalities with regards to census before going for summer holidays. It is important because every Indian citizen will be provided with a Unique Identification Card (UIC) which will be there identification proof," Swadheen Kshatriya told reporters here.

MCGM will begin the door-to-door process of data collection for the census from May 1 and it will go on till June 15.

"There is no penalty to be imposed on those who do not become part of the census drive but we can just appeal to the people to get themselves register as it will be for their benefit," Kshatriya said.

The Commissioner also said, all those who are living in structures including in slums will be part of the census drive.

"There are 28,906 house blocks (one house block consists of 150 houses). One person will visit 150 homes. About 31,797 enumerators will carry out the survey," Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said. "Citizens are required to provide accurate information to the enumerator, who would then do marking on the wall of the house, which means the information is obtained from a particular house," Mhaiskar said.

The civic administration has also assured that the data collected under the census process is confidential and the information cannot be given even if a Right To Information plea is made.
