Mercury dips in parts of north India

New Delhi: Mercury dipped by a few notches in several parts of the north India as a woman succumbed to the chilly weather in Jammu and Kashmir where higher reaches continued to reel under intense cold.

In Himachal Pradesh, high altitude areas of Chamba, Pangi and Bharmaur experienced mild snowfall, while other parts of the hill state witnessed cloudy weather.

Clouds hovered over the state capital Shimla too where the day temperature was recorded at 14.3 degree Celsius, while the minimum at 3.5 degrees, the Met office said.

The cold condition intensified in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with the minimum temperature plummeting by up to two degrees at several places.

Karnal in Haryana settled at a low of 7.2 degree Celsius, two notches below normal, while Patiala had a low of 7.5 degrees.

Rohtak was the coldest in Haryana with a low of 6.2 degree Celsius, one notch below normal.

The night temperature dipped by one to four degrees in parts of Rajasthan with Mount Abu and Ganganagar being the coldest places in the region with a minimum temperature of 8 degree Celsius.

Churu, Bundi and Pilani recorded a low of 9 degrees, a Met official said, adding Jaipur and Barmer recorded 14 degrees each.

In the national capital, the mercury remained above normal with the morning fog clearing the way for a sunny day.

The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 10.6 degree Celsius, which is three degrees above normal and marginally less than yesterday's minimum of 10.8 degrees, while the maximum was 23.5 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, a 70-year-old woman died of cold in Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir raising the number of such deaths in the state to eight, officials said.

Elsewhere in the state, the minimum temperature in the frontier region of Ladakh settled at minus 7.6 degrees Celsius in Kargil and Leh towns.

In Kashmir valley, the hill resort of Pahalgam in South was the coldest place recording a maximum of 5.2 and a minimum of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar recorded a high of 11.7 and a low of 2.4 degree Celsius.
