Mercury remains around 40 degree C in northern region

Day-time temperatures remained around 40 degree celsius in most parts of the northern region as showers lashed lower areas of Himachal Pradesh giving respite to the people.

In Punjab and Haryana, the maximum temperatures at most places settled close to 40 degree celsius mark, the Met office said.

Chandigarh recorded a high of 35.2 degree C, while the maximum temperatures at Ambala and Patiala were 36.8 and 37.8 respectively. Amritsar recorded a maximum of 37 degree C.

However, Hisar in Haryana recorded 40.7 C, three degrees above normal. The Met office has forecast light rains or thundershowers at isolated places in the region tomorrow.

In Himachal Pradesh, Shimla received showers which brought the mercury down to 20.2 degree celsius as middle hills and lower areas in the state received light rains.
