New Delhi: An Indian Air Force (IAF) combat pilot was killed in a MiG fighter jet crash near Bikaner in Rajasthan on Tuesday.

"The MiG-21 Type-96 crashed today. The pilot has died," an IAF officer said here.

The pilot's identity will not be released till his family is informed.

The crash is under investigation, the officer said, adding a court of inquiry will be ordered.

MiG-21 jets of IAF have earned the sobriquet 'flying coffin' following a string of crashes.

its only when one of the mig`s would crash in the army offices then they would realise that they should replace the jets. its very shameful where the top officers are not reactive at all. god may the soul of the pilot rest in peace.

why not lca is quickly inducted why not mrca is decided soon we also hear that upgradation program of our mirage jet will take 10 year . . and we paying more then 2 bil usd for that what if any mirage also fall down during this time . . after 10 year many upgrade will be obsolate like radar so jet will upgrade last will already too late as we have almost 50 mirage . . in 10 year we can induct 200 new better jet then why so long for upgradation knowing this is already delayed decision its better to fly downgraded lca then flying a mig 21 as our pilot can give advice to improve it if got some problem to improve lca have to serve ur longer rather mig 21 which have no life now we should also induct new trainer as soon as possible . . last and imp . . . india loose in england it was a huge news . : but i pilot give his life for nation but no imp given to this news if something happen to politician or actor then it always given importance . . . i think we forget the rang de baranti movie . .

i dont agree ? mig 21 are still backbone of indian air force,it could be a human error or else the pilot could have ejected out, had he got ample time.pilot killed aws indeed a bad news.but again it is time to have a relook on the future of mig`s.
