London: The British police on Monday claim to have made some headway in tracing the missing Indian-origin student Gurdeep Hayer, who has been missing from Manchester since 2 January even as his family remained mystified at his disappearance.
The Greater Manchester police today said they have now spoken to the taxi driver, who collected Gurdeep from outside the nightclub shortly after 2.15am, to take him to an address in the Rusholme locality of Manchester.
Gurdeep, 20, was last seen taking a taxi from outside the Sankeys nightclub in the early morning of 2 January.
Based in West Bromwich, he had traveled to Manchester to celebrate New Year`s Eve with friends and had gone out again on the night of 1 January.
As the taxi was driving down Hathersage Road in Longsight a few minutes later, Gurdeep asked the driver if he could stop the taxi where they were, as he wanted to get out, the police said.
The taxi driver obliged and Gurdeep then paid his fare and got out of the taxi on Hathersage Road, close to Victoria Baths.
Detective Inspector Mark Radford, of South Manchester CID, said: "Gurdeep`s family are understandably fraught with worry for him, as nobody has seen or heard anything from him for a week".
"We now have new information into the last known sighting of Gurdeep, which we have released in the hope it may jog someone`s memory, who may have seen him getting out of the taxi on Hathersage Road or in this area shortly afterwards," he added.
Gurdeep`s mother, Peramjit Kaur, became concerned after her son did not return home as planned on January 3 and reported Gurdeep missing two days later.
Gurdeep is a first-year student of Business Studies at Glyndwr (RPT Glyndwr) University in north-east Wales.
Kaur told the media: "It is completely out of character for him not to keep in touch with me, he`s a very reliable person and he`s usually ringing me all the time because he knows how much I worry".
"We`re completely mystified as to why he would go missing. He`s just started university and loves his lessons and his life there, he`s been home with us for the holidays and was his usual, happy self. As a family we just don`t know what to do," she added.
Gurdeep was last seen wearing a navy blue polo shirt, black or blue jeans and trainers.
He is described as Asian, with a medium build, about 5ft 11in tall with spiky black hair with stubble, and he speaks with a Midlands accent.
