New Delhi: AICC general secretary
Mohsina Kidwai was on Wednesday elected Chairperson of the Haj
Committee of India.
Kidwai would be the first woman Chairperson of the
minority body.
The Ministry of External Affairs, which is the nodal
authority in the Central government for administering the Haj
Committee Act, 2002, convened the first meeting of the Haj
Committee today in New Delhi to elect the Chairperson and the
two Vice-Chairpersons.
While Kidwai was elected as the Chairperson, Hasan
Ahmed and Aboo Bucker were elected as Vice-Chairpersons, a
release by the MEA said.
There have been allegations of corruption in the
conduct of the Haj. After the expiry of the three year term of
the previous Haj Committee, it was reconstituted recently.
The Haj Committee Act, 2002 provides for the
establishment of a Haj Committee of India for making
arrangements for Haj pilgrimage by Muslims.
