New Delhi: Disapproving of the action of
some lawyers in Bangalore jostling with Karnataka High Court's
controversial Chief Justice P D Dinakaran and locking up two
judges, the Centre today said the judiciary cannot be shaken
by "hammering" whatever be the provocation.
Law Minister M Veerappa Moily asked the lawyers to have
faith in the constitutional authorities as they were "already
seized of the matter" regarding Dinakaran who has been accused
of land grabbing.
"Whatever be the provocation, I don't think the lawyers
should take law into their own hands and create a situation to
embarass the judiciary and affect its credibility and
reputation," he told agency here.
Some members of Advocates' Association of Bangalore
(AAB), protesting continuance of Dinakaran as Chief Justice,
had yesterday barged into the hall where the judge was holding
court and shouted slogans against him.
Terming the incident as "really unfortunate", Moily
said "I do not think any intimidation, whether it is
legitimate or otherwise, will help us to keep the reputation
of the legal profession."
He said the reputation, credibility and goodwill of
"the important pillar of democracy like judiciary cannot be
shaken by hammering."
Apparently referring to Dinakaran, Moily said
"individuals do not count but institutions matter for keeping
a strong judiciary".
Moily told the lawyers that the institution's
credibility and reputation will have to be preserved at any
cost and "everyone should cooperate".
The "fence cannot eat the crop. They need to be the
real protectors of judiciary", he said.
He said the legal fraternity had a greater
contribution to make in protecting judiciary.
