Heavy rains lash Delhi, NCR; respite from heat, humidity

New Delhi: Reeling under scorching heat, Delhiites heaved a sigh of relief on Sunday as heavy rains hit several parts of the city and its nearby areas. However, the Meteorological Department on Saturday predicted arrival of monsoon from July 15. As per the MeT department, the pressure in Bay of Bengal has affected monsoon and there will be humidity till July 14. It also said that the present weather is due to absence of clouds. The delay in monsoon has adversely affected the supply of several essential food commodities. After rise in the rates of onions, now tomatoes` retail price has soared to Rs 50 per kg in the National Capital Region. The increase in the price can be blamed due to scanty rainfall across North India. Earlier during the month, tomatoes are were available at Rs 20-30 per kilogram in the retail market while it was available for Rs 10-15 per kilogram in the wholesale market in the national capital. On Saturday, the maximum temperature in the city was 35.6 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal. Adding to the discomfort was high humidity levels between 69%-88%.
