‘More judges in India`s SC as compared to other countries’

Chief Justice of India (CJI) K G Balakrishnan on Saturday said the number of judges in Supreme Court in India was higher as compared to other countries.

Balakrishnan today said the number of judges in Supreme Court
in India was higher as compared to other countries.

The number of judges in Supreme Court is not more than 16
in other countries, he said inaugurating the centenary
celebrations of District and Sessions court here.

He said the strength of judges in Supreme Court which now
stood at 26 (25 judges and a Chief Justice) was raised to 31.

The CJI also said the number of cases in the courts are
rising along with rise in standard of education and economic
factors.

In 2008, 68,000 cases were filed. They rose to 77,000 in
2009 out of which a total of 21,000 cases were disposed, he
said adding 80,000 cases were pending in the court this year.

Every year the number of cases are likely to increase by
10 to 12 per cent, he said.

Minister for Law and Justice M Veerappa Moily said there
was need for more reforms in the judiciary system to reduce
the delay in settling the cases.

He said the 13th Finance Commission has kept apart grant
of Rs 5000 crore for improving the judicial system. 5000
Gramanyayalayas with mobile courts will be launched on October
2, this year, to dispose of the cases within six months.

A state-of-the-art judicial academy will be set up with
an investment of Rs 300 crore, Moily said.

A sum of Rs 250 crore will be allocated for the welfare
of judicial officers and Rs 150 crore for extending training
to public prosecutors, he said.
