New Delhi: Lawmakers cutting across party
lines on Sunday batted for reservation to Other Backward Classes
(OBCs) in judiciary and sought a parliamentary committee of
MPs from the weaker section.

Speaking at the All India United Forum of OBCs Employees`
Welfare Associations here, Rajya Sabha MP E M Sudarsana
Natchiappan said there should be high courts in North-Eastern
states, a statement which was later supported by CPI`s D Raja.

"This should be considered then only rights of people of
the region will be taken care of," Natchiappan said.

Supporting it, Raja added, "then the people of the region will
not require to travel to Kolkata."

Talking about mechanisms to deal with the weaker sections
of the society, Convenor of OBCs MPs Forum V Hanumantha Rao
said "we will meet Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and UPA
chairperson Sonia Gandhi on our demand for a parliamentary
committee of MPS from the section."

Rao said the MPs should also "press for reservation in
judiciary so that people from weaker section become part of
the system".

D Raja said disinvestment in the public sector will make
the Public Sector Undertakings vulnerable as a result of which
"how can we achieve social justice". "Public sector has got a
social responsibility".

Many of the MPs emphasised on unity between SCs, STs and
OBCs to fight together in their endeavour to get their "due
share".

Raja said, "SCs, STs and OBCs should join hands in
fighting for their rights. They can play an important role in
getting back their rights which have been deprived in the
past."

The leaders thanked Former Prime Minister V P Singh and
Former Union Minister Arjun Singh for helping the OBCs get
their "share of opportunity" through reservation.

Another member of the Forum, S K Kharventhan empahsised
on the need for a law to "protect the character of OBCs".

Besides, the leaders also said people from the section
should help each other to achieve maximum benefit.
