New Delhi: Concerned over the plight of
children, Congress member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury today urged
the government to take steps to improve their lot.

While introducing a private member`s bill on child welfare
in the Lok Sabha, Chowdhury said, "It is regretting that even
so many years after independence, children beg on streets and
work in factories and homes."

He suggested that the government should take effective
steps to deal with the problem of child labour.

Participating in the debate, Hukmdev Narayan Yadav (BJP)
held bureaucracy responsible for various problems facing the
country and made a passionate appeal for changing the system
of governance.

The government, Yadav demanded, should take steps to end
corruption and ensure that money being given to NGOs is
utilised properly.

Pointing out that about 45,000 children go missing every
year, Shailendra Kumar (SP) demanded that government find out
where these children go.

He said government must do something to improve
malnutrition among children and women.
