Mumbai: A general manager and a former assistant general manager of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), accused of being involved in a Rs 85 lakh scam, were remanded in judicial custody by a special CBI court here on Thursday.

Two distributors of SIM cards were sent to four days' CBI custody.

Under the scheme, MTNL had come out with SIM cards at Rs 75, which were supplied to the distributors for sale on the commission of Rs 50 apiece.

The CBI today told the court that Mohandas and Mogha allegedly submitted forged documents with fake names, creating bogus customers.

Several of the SIM cards were activated this way, and the dealers Ravindra Belloria and Praveen Agarwal claimed commission for bogus customers, while Mohandas and Mogha received kickbacks.

The scam was underway since 2008, causing loss of Rs 85 lakh to the public sector telecom major, CBI said.
