Mullaperiyar row: Day of fasts in TN, Kerala

Kerala Leader of Opposition VS Achuthanandan will on Wednesday observe a day long fast at Mullaperiyar on Wednesday to mobilise public opinion for a new dam and press for urgent intervention by the Centre.

Thiruvananthapuram/Chennai: After two senior ministers KM Mani, PJ Joseph, Leader of Opposition VS Achuthanandan will on Wednesday observe a day long fast at Mullaperiyar on Wednesday to mobilise public opinion for a new dam and press for urgent intervention by the Centre.

The 88-year-old former C M would fast at Chappath at Vandipperiyar near the Mullaperiyar dam. LDF also plans to form a `human wall` from Mullaperiyar to Kochi tomorrow to demand construction of a new dam in place of the 116-year-old structure.

Achuthanandan urged people to exercise utmost restraint during protests and warned that certain
vested interests are trying to foment trouble between people of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The state government also appears to not let go of the issue. As per reports the state government will approach the apex court today over its demand that the water level in the dam be reduced from the current 136 feet to 120 feet.

In Tamil Nadu, villagers in Theni district belonging to the ‘Pennycuick Peravai’ have decided to observe a day long fast today condemning the Kerala government`s efforts to build a new dam replacing the Mullaperiyar reservoir.

Pennycuick Peravai is named after Colonel John Pennycuick who completed the task of building Mullaperiyar dam.

Yesterday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa appealed to the people of Kerala not to succumb "to the mechanisations of ill-wishers and unscrupulous mischief mongers".

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is expected to take up the ban on controversial movie ‘Dam 999’.
