Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Tuesday, a day before Chinese President Xi Jinping reaches Gujarat.

BJP president Amit Shah, who reached here on Monday, and Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel welcomed the PM. The CM later felicitated the PM.

Addressing BJP workers on his arrival, the PM, speaking in Gujarati, thanked for the warm welcome accorded to him.

"I am in the land where I grew up among the people with whom I worked for years," added Modi, who is visiting GUjarat for the first time after becoming the Prime Minister.

He further said that his experience as the Gujarat chief minister helped him in Delhi.

A special dome is being raised at the airport for Modi to address party workers.

This is the first time any head of government will begin his state visit to India from Ahmedabad.

Modi was Gujarat chief minister from 2001 until he became the PM in May.

Modi will set aside protocol and himself receive Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Chinese President will be in India on a three-day sojourn that will also take him to Delhi.

The PM will himself receive Xi on his arrival from Colombo on Wednesday afternoon.

A guard of honour will be presented to Xi who will be accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan and a high-level delegation.

It will be the first guard of honour to any head of government on the tarmac of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport of Ahmedabad.

Informed sources told a news agency that a contingent of the Indian Air Force will present the guard of honour to Xi.

The Chinese President flies into India onboard a Chinese Airlines Boeing 747 aircraft.

State Minister Nitin Patel said that three MoUs are likely to be signed between China and Gujarat.

Ahmedabad city may become the sister city of Guangzhou.

As many as 100 delegates from China and 80 Indian business tycoons will participate at delegation level meeting between Modi and Xi.
