N-weapon hasn't enhanced India's security: Aiyar

New York: Testing nuclear weapon has not enhanced India's national security, veteran diplomat and Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has said, noting that Pakistan also acquired the atomic bomb within three weeks after the Pokhran II.

"We had a strong conventional military advantage over Pakistan....the minute we became a nuclear weapon power....it took Pakistan three weeks to become a nuclear weapons power themselves," Aiyar said, who is at the United Nations to speak on the issue of nuclear disarmament.

On the necessity of having nuclear bombs since Pakistan had them, Aiyar told PTI that that India's security hadn't been enhanced by acquiring these weapons.

He said India always remained in the vanguard of the movement for nuclear disarmament but lost its traditional position on the issue in the past 22 years as it had to conform to the voices of other nuclear powers, the Congress leader said.

"Even since we have become a nuclear weapon power ourselves ... there seems to be a certain ambiguity as to how pro-active we should be in regard to nuclear disarmament," Aiyar told agency.

"India always remained in the vanguard of the movement for the elimination of nuclear weapons?it is a position we have tended to lose the past 22 years," he continued.

"We should strive and pro-actively to our traditional position."

Aiyar further pointed out that India was being held back in pursuing its "traditional position" since now it had to conform to the voices of other nuclear powers, which was not the case in 1982 when Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi laid down the Action Plan for a Nuclear-Weapons- Free and Nonviolent World Order.

The Action Plan sets 2010 as the date by which the world would have been rid of nuclear weapons, and that is reason Aiyar decided to speak at the UN on that forgotten deadline set 22 years ago.

"Having become a nuclear weapon power there is a desire that our postures in regard to the international discussions on nuclear weapons should be more in conformity with the nuclear weapons powers than asymmetrical to that position," Aiyar said.

"I have continued to take an interest in this matter, which is disproportionate to the interest that the government of India is taking at the moment," he added.

Responding to whether the new US-Russia agreement to cut down their nuclear arsenal would move the world towards fuller disarmament, Aiyar said "It?s good but it's not disarmament."

"It is the reduction of hostility between the two powers who share between them perhaps 90 per cent of the entire nuclear arsenal of the world," he added.

"It is a reflection of the reduction of the danger of nuclear war breaking out between these two major powers."

I think Pakistan is a safe haven for various terrorist groups and is clearly promoting terrorism it seems. The so called democratic govt of Pakistan is totally under the command of these terror outfits.US made a huge mistake by making Pakistan a nuclear country. Its something like ``digging your own grave``.I think the nuclear weapons in Pakistan are potentially dangerous thing for the security of whole world.Soon in future a country like Pakistan will start dictating terms to US by using these nuclear weapons as a sheild, the way they have been doing against India.

Its sad that both India and Pakistan are willing to let down each other.
If these two greatest nations think positive and make friendly co-operations in Economy, Sports, Culture and Infrastructure than I bet you all that Indo-Pak Jodi will conquer the world.
We both nations are very talented. But Sad our last 63 years wasted in proxy wars and conventional wars.
So I think time has come to stand side by side and to fight against Poverty, Lawlessness, Unemployment and Economic Progress in Sub-continent.

Dear All Indians,

Just to refresh your memory, Pakistan never wanted to get into nuke race. India started begging for the technology in 1974... Pakistan never wanted it, nor persued it uptil 1974.

But what do you expect when you acquired it? Pakistan would just sit down and wait? Now you comfort youself with the feeling that you guys developed it and Pakistan acquired it from outside? Grow up, rather than criticizing Pk for acquiring it outside, have you scientists educated to be able to pass your technology which is constantly failing in tests..

be honest to your ownselves!

Dear Jindal (USA),

I hope you should come out of ``war games`` mental-state, as soon as possible.

Before desiring to eliminate the Pak-China border, you first need to get some books of history of this region, particularly on the subjects of ``Partition of sub-continent`` .. and also try to grasp some knowledge of geography and demography of this region.

Having a desire for anything is not a bad thing, but there must some logical reasoning behind it.

USA is already trying to find an escape from Afghanistan. Two decades ago Russia fled, as you know already. You (India) are testing your arms strength in Kashmir for last 20 years (with half a million military-force), but all in vain.
And in this background, you are day-dreaming of a new thing. Grow up buddy !

Sir ,it is heartening to read the speech of Mani Shankar Aiyar - a Diplomat turned politician . Being in the PMO and close friend of Late Rajiv Gandhi ,Mani shankar alone helped Rajiv Gandhi set an agenda for future , be it Panchayati Raj in India ,Revolutions in IT in the new century and measures related to Nuclear Power .India needs brilliant and upright leaders like Mani Shankar .

I do respect Mani for his frank statements... but now he has become a Jack Ass... testing the nukes are just symbolic.... ours was the indigenious technology, but pakistanis got everything from outside, may it be china or any other country... so testing was important to us and not for pakistanis....Mani is craving for media attention. he is a big loooooser

Strong diplomacy is required to make the UN/US/EU agree on making entire Kashmir a part of India. This also reduces a threat from China to Western interests. Pakistan should not have a border with China nor should it have nuclear weapons. India has a long border with China building asymmetric nuclear capacity is a must for India.

Let the US and Russia to come down to lower three digits in number of nuclear warheads and then we will talk about a nuclear free world.
