Naqvi files nomination for RS seat from UP

Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Monday filed his nomination papers for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha scheduled to be held on June 17.

Naqvi on Monday filed his nomination papers for the biennial
elections to the Rajya Sabha scheduled to be held on June 17.

Naqvi, accompanied by party colleagues Vinay Katiyar,
Lalji Tandon and state president Surya Pratap Shahi among
others, filed his papers before returning officer and
Principal Secretary Vidhan Sabha Pradeep Dubey.

Of 10 Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh, whose term
would expire on July 4, seven are of Samajwadi Party, two of
BSP and one from BJP.

In addition, by-election to a seat is also being held
following demise of SP member Janeshwar Mishra.

Prominent leaders, whose term expire include Jaya
Bachchan, Arun Shourie, Bhagwati Singh and Satish Chandra
Mishra.

The ruling BSP, which earlier had only two members in the
Upper House, has decided to field candidates on seven of 11
seats.

The BSP list includes S C Misra, Ambeth Rajan, Jugal
Kishore, Salem Ansari, S P Singh Baghel, Narendra Kumar
Kashyap and Rajpal Singh Siani.

SP had decided to contest two seats and announced
candidature of Jaya Bachchan and Rashid Masood.

However, Jaya withdrew her candidature citing personal
reasons, after which SP national general secretary and
spokesman Mohan Singh was named as candidate.
