It was also learnt that Singh called Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and Shriromani Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal and informed them that a decision on Modi has been taken by the party. The formal announcement on Modi will be made by the BJP leadership at 5 pm this evening, report claimed.

12.40 pm: Gadkari, Ananth Kumar meet Swaraj

Having met BJP stalwart LK Advani, two senior leaders of the party, Nitin Gadkari and Ananth Kumar reached the residence of Sushma Swaraj, a known loyalist of Advani, to convince her to support Modi.

The meeting is being seen as the party last attempt to persuade the Advani faction to unite for a bigger cause and back Modi as the BJP`s unanimous choice for the top job.

As per reports, Nitin Gadkari is expected to meet LK Advani today to persuade the party veteran to announce his support to Narendra Modi as the unanimous PM candidate of the party.

The party`s patriarch LK Advani remains opposed to Narendra Modi`s PM candidature along with senior leaders like Sushma Swaraj. The party wants to make the big announcement that its Gujarat leader will be its official candidate for prime minister`s post in 2014 polls. The BJP parliamentary board is due to meet this evening where a formal announcement on Modi is most likely to be made.

Earlier developments

  • Rajnath Singh said that all senior leaders were being consulted on the issue and sought to downplay reservations of senior party leader LK Advani on declaring Modi as prime ministerial candidate. Party sources said Rajnath Singh met Sushma Swaraj in a bid to pave the way for the announcement. He had earlier met Advani and party leader Murli Manohar Joshi. They said Rajnath Singh may also decide to make an announcement on Narendra Modi after consulting members of the board individually.
  • Despite Advani’s refusal to drop his opposition to Modi as the party`s PM nominee, the Gujarat CM’s popularity and acceptance among BJP continued to ascend. Hectic efforts are on to convince Advani to give up his opposition and give his blessings to Modi.
  • Anticipating the appointment of Narendra Modi as the BJP’s PM candidate, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on June 16 broke the 17-year-old alliance between his party, the JD(U), and the BJP.
  • On June 10, BJP patriarch LK Advani resigned from all party posts over Narendra Modi`s elevation as its campaign committee chief. The dramatic development prompted leaders to rush to Advani`s residence in a bid to pacify him but he showed no signs of relenting. He withdrew his resignation on June 11 after RSS intervened in the matter.
