New Delhi: The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) is expected to be operationalised by the end of 2011 if a decision on its inception could be taken by this year-end, Home Minister P Chidambaram said Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, Chidambaram said the discussion paper pf NCTC was ready and deliberations have been held in different levels.

"I said that with the hope that a decision would be taken by the end of this year. Then I am hopeful that the NCTC would be set up within 12 months in comparison to 24 months that the United States took (for a similar unit). I am still confident that a decision on NCTC would be taken by the end of the year," he said.

NCTC will be set up for strengthening the intelligence- sharing and analysing mechanism in the country.

Referring to proposed National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), the Home Minister said its Detailed Project Report was ready and now the Home Ministry would place it before the Cabinet Committee on Security for approval.

"The DPR is ready. It has been presented to me. Now the DPR will go to the CCS. The core team has been set up. The core team is working on the DPR," he said.

The proposed NATGRID -- a world-class integrated national security database -- will facilitate quick access to information on an individual -- like details of his/her banking, insurance, immigration, income tax, telephone and Internet usage.
