NCW for better implementation of law to combat trafficking

Advocating the need for sensitisation of law enforcers, National Commission for Women on Wednesday called for better implementation of the law to combat trafficking of women and children.

New Delhi: Advocating the need for sensitisation
of law enforcers, National Commission for Women on Wednesday called for better implementation of the law to combat trafficking of
women and children.

Releasing the book `Trafficking of Women and Children: Myths
and Realities,` written by a former IPS officer, NCW
chairperson Girija Vyas said sensitive police officials and
and more pro-active civil society could help the government
better tackle the problem.

"Besides a strong law, more sensitive police officers and
law enforcers, who understand the problems of the victims
and a more vocal civil society is needed," she said.

Written by Shankar Sen, former Director general, National
Human Rights Commission and former Director of the National
Police Academy, the book is an abridged version of a research
work published in 2005.

"The voluminous research work we published earlier was
meant for scholars, but we condensed it to suit the needs of
the general public," Sen, who interviewed 600 police officers
dealing with trafficking, besides a number of brothel owners
and victims over a period of three years, said.

He said vigorous law enforcement, proper rehabilitation
and awareness is needed to prevent trafficking. "Besides,
issues other than prostitution, that are the reasons of
trafficking, need to be brought into policy making," he said.

Vyas said the NCW would refer several of the suggestions
offered in the book to the government.

3 arrested for human trafficking

A couple and a girl were arrested
on the charge of human trafficking at Dimapur, the police said
today.

The women cell of police in Dimapur yesterday arrested
Ochimenla and her husband Sanjib Dutta from Dimapur for
allegedly alluring young Naga girls and selling them to a
brothel in Mumbai, the police said.

After escaping from the brothel, a 17-year-old girl
arrived at Dimapur and complained that the couple took her and
two other girls to Mumbai with the promise of job in a
company.

Another 27-year-old girl, Amentoli, was arrested for
allegedly forcing her 12-year-old orphan cousin into sex trade
after she was reported missing last month.
