Addu (Maldives): India on Thursday told Bangladesh
that there was still some need for consensus in the country on
the Teesta river water-sharing issue and that the interest of
all concerned, including West Bengal, should be taken care of.
This was conveyed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during
a meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on
the sidelines of the SAARC summit when the two leaders
discussed the ways and means of resolving water issues.
On the issue of resolving Feni water issue it was decided
that an agreement could be signed along with resolution of
issues relating to sharing of water of other common rivers.
Briefing the media on the meeting, Foreign Secretary
Ranjan Mathai said there were no substantive differences
between the two countries and Tripura also had no objections
to Feni water-sharing issue.
Hasina appreciated Singh`s visit to Bangladesh in
September when India allowed 24-hour access to Bangladeshi
nationals to the Teen Bigha corridor and her own visit to the
corridor in October.
