Need to change the perception that Hindi speaking people are illiterate: Naqvi

As the Narendra Modi-led government continues to receive flak from different quarters over its directive asking the central government employees to use Hindi while posting tweets or messages on social media, senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Friday stressed on promoting the national language.

New Delhi: As the Narendra Modi-led government continues to receive flak from different quarters over its directive asking the central government employees to use Hindi while posting tweets or messages on social media, senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Friday stressed on promoting the national language.

Posting his views on social networking website Twitter, Naqvi said that the perception that Hindi speaking people are illiterate, while those who speak English are intelligent needs to be dispelled.

The BJP leader further stressed on giving importance to Hindi.

Congress leaders, DMK chief M Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, PMK leader S Ramadoss, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have slammed the move and demanded roll back of such a directive.

The BJP-led government on Thursday moved to assuage upset feelings over a directive. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, in the second tweet he posted on his new ministry handle Thursday, wrote: "The Home Ministry is of the view that all Indian languages are important. The Ministry is committed to promote all languages of the country."
Karunanidhi, Thursday, hit out at the Narendra Modi-led government for giving priority to Hindi.

Karnuanidhi said, “"No one can deny it`s a beginning to impose Hindi against one`s wish to treat non-Hindi speakers as second class citizens. Why is priority being given to Hindi in social media?”

On Friday, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam supremo Jayalalitha wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that English should be medium of communication on social media.
