New Delhi: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday stressed on the need to empower women and exhorted them to raise their voice against suppression.

Addressing Mahila Congress workers at Congress Sankalp Sammelan being held at Talkatora Stadium, Rahul said, “In India people worship goddesses, address women as mother/sister, but the same people molest you in buses, suppress your voices.”

“Rapes are reported in newspapers. We make laws, but Laws don`t usher change. Change should occur within society,” he added.

“Only women can change the mindset of people. When women get empowered then others will change their mindset...Now don`t leave it to men, now you have to change your mindset,” he added.

Apparently taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul said that “big people” say that rapes are shameful but what is required is that they should change their mindset.

Rahul added, “This government`s perception is that women should be worshipped and not empowered. But our mindset is different, we want to empower women because we believe in them.”
The Congress leader accepted that their was a need to correct the wrongs in the Congress` organisation and added that a Tsunami of women workers was about to flood the party and they will be made to contest elections wherever possible.
