Nitin Gadkari flays government over corruption

Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari has assailed the Congress party-led UPA-II Government for its high-handedness.

Nagpur: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari has assailed the Congress party-led UPA-II Government for its high-handedness and intolerance towards divergent opinions.

Taking to media here, Gadkari said that the government’s aspersions on the Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s (CAG) report on coal block allocations were inappropriate.

"The CAG asks the government about its objections before submitting its report. This is not a report prepared by the opposition. The CAG has constitutional duties, and is directly related to the government. Therefore, to speak of the CAG in a derisive manner is inappropriate," said Gadkari.

In Pune, BJP lawmaker Tarun Vijay said the opposition had been left with no choice but to mount a massive people’s agitation against Congress rule.

"The BJP is left with no option but to raise awareness throughout the country for a massive people`s movement, against the high-handedness and repression of opposition by the federal government, as well as the persecution of patriotic nationals under pressure of appeasing its vote banks. We declare that there will be a massive movement," he added

Over the past one week, the BJP had disrupted Parliament proceedings, seeking Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh`s resignation over the CAG report on coal block allocations.

The BJP has held the Prime Minister, who then held direct charge of the coal ministry, responsible for what has been estimated as a notional loss of Rs 1.86 lakh crores by the CAG in coal block allocations, and demanded his resignation.

The CAG report on coal block allocations states that nearly 150 coalfields were allotted to private and state-run firms without transparency and objectivity between 2005 and 2009.
