Nitin Gadkari in trouble over funding for his companies New Delhi: BJP chief Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday found himself in trouble with the government deciding to go into allegations of dubious funding in his companies which cast a shadow over his getting a second term as party president in December.

As embarrassing details tumbled out about the funding for Purti Power and Sugar Ltd run by Gadkari, Corporate Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily said as the information on the issue has come in public domain, the Registrars of Companies will "definitely inquire into it".

"We have not ordered anything. It is all coming in the newspapers. Since it has come in public domain, we told our ministry to make some discreet inquiry to find out what exactly is the matter. Are there any violations of Companies Act?" he said.

When asked whether the business dealings of Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, will also be scrutinised, he said the two issues were separate and there was no link between them.

Media reports have raised questions over the source of funds for Purti Power and Sugar Ltd controlled by Gadkari. Media investigations claim that major investments and large loans to Purti were made by a construction firm Ideal Road Builders (IRB) group, which had won contracts between 1995 and 1999, when Gadkari was PWD minister in Maharashtra.

Gadkari has denied the allegations and offered himself and his companies to any probe.

BJP attacked the government saying its approach was "selective and prejudiced" about dealing with Gadkari issue while ignoring corruption allegations against Vadra and former Union Minister Virbhadra Singh.

The party said it endorses the stand of Gadkari that he was open to any investigation by any competent authority.

Adding to Gadkari's discomfiture, his party MP Ram Jethmalani demanded his resignation in the wake of corruption allegations and asked him not to seek a second term in office.

"In the interest of the party, in his own interest, he should get out of the fray now and he must give the position to somebody who inspires greater confidence. He should not aspire for a second term," he said.

"Obviously, there is suspicion about his integrity and in the interest of the party and his own interest he must get out of this position. It weakens the party position.

"In the coming elections we are fighting against corruption and we have to have a man of absolute impeccable integrity," he said.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh, who has been attacking Gadkari, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking an investigation into the dealings of Gadkari's company.

"Gadkari has also said that he is open to a free and fair investigation. Being the National President of BJP, it is in the fitness of things that his case is properly investigated and he gets a fair opportunity to prove his innocence and clear his name," Digvijay Singh wrote in his letter.

Investigation against Gadkari is fine but skipping prob against Vir Bhadra Singh & Robert Vadra raises fingers on the credibility of Congress party.

This is nothing but the pot calling the kettle black.Let the Govt first enquire into the dubious deals entered into between Robert vadra-DLF as alleged by IAC activists. Then only enquiry into Gadkari`s deals will have any credibility. If law minister`s party is clean why they are running away from accepting the challege thrown by Kejriwal and other IAC activists for a public debate on corruption. Otherwise the probe will be an eyewash to hoodwink the indian people.

These are the reasons why Modi is autocratic in his decision-making. He maintains a near corrupt-free and good governance because he does not allow anyone to interfere in his governance. The biased approach of Congress and an unstable BJP in the Opposition is weakening India. Need a firm PM, a visionary PM with the focus on development and tackle corruption with a strategy like how it is done in Gujarat. Modi for 2014!

Ms Swaraj needs to first verify the facts before blindly supporting Mr Gadkari, just because he is the party president! She had earlier supported Gali Janardhan Reddy in Karnataka in the middle of serious allegations (which are now proved right). I hope she is not involved directly.

Sanchetis connection with Gadkari is well aware. We now understand that Gadkari also used his power to get some foreign fly ash companies operating in India to get contracts for them and he through his forefront companies taking money from these companies as mere consultant fees regularly. We feel that there is huge corruptions for alloting fly ash to the contractors by thermal power plants. If it is properly investigated, we can find out more than the loss CAG found in coal block allotments. If Govt. of India or any NGOs starts starts the procedures and corruptions involved in fly ash allotments, millions of rupees corruption will come out openly. Darda in Maharashtra as well as Gadkari type politicians are equally involved in giving permissions for certain companies in various states where their parties are in power.......

This is a welcome move but why not against the son-in-law (Mr. Robert Vadra) of Congress party? Is he above law of land ? Why they are making mockery of our democracy and judiciary? There should be an independent probe against all corrupt politicians, bureaucrat and industrialists. They made a syndicate. There nexus must be probed and if found guilty they must be hanged. They have rotten our society and our country. This is our ill-fate that a corrupt politician like Mr. Salman Khurshid is our law minister. What a tragedy and what a shame ? Although we are the MANGO PEOPLE.
